sigma's astronomy weekend - october 2008

Thanks to the generosity of the Baxters Foundation, Moray's Astronomy Club, Sigma has been able to host our own astronomy event. The event will be run and hosted by Sigma at their meeeting venue, Birnie Village Hall, Elgin.

The Sigma Astronomy Weekend will be held on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October. Whilst the event is in its early stages of planning, here are some basic outlines of what will be happening. Some of the timings and events are subject to change, so please keep checking back for updates.

Friday 24th October
Evening Event 7pm - 10pm (approx)
The event will be “opened” at around 7pm with an introduction to the evening and a welcome to our guest, Dave Chalton from Dark Sky Scotland and, hopefully, the Trustees from the Baxters Foundation.
Following that there will be three separate events, all running simultaneously on a 20 min rotation:

  • Starlab – Dave Chalton – Dark Sky Scotland
  • What we will see tonight – Pete Sherman and Ian Brantingham
  • Getting Started in Astronomy – Tim Schroder.

If the weather is clear, we will then proceed to the field at the back of the hall for an observing session.  If the weather is not clear, there will be a programme of 20 min talks by several Sigma members.

Saturday 25th October
Family Fun Afternoon 2pm - 4.30pm (approx)

  • Starlab – with Dave Chalton
  • Rocket launching – make and launch your own rocket
  • Astronomy under an umbrella – see the night sky above your own head
  • Comet making demonstrations – by Bill Leslie
  • Constellation telescopes – pin prick a constellation and look through your own “telescope”
  • Make a sun dial
  • The Solar System on a toilet roll

Evening Session 7pm - 10pm (approx)

  • Starlab – Dave Chalton – Dark Sky Scotland
  • What we will see tonight – Pete Sherman and Ian Brantingham
  • Getting Started in Astronomy – Tim Schroder.
If the weather is clear, we will then proceed to the field at the back of the hall for an observing session.  If the weather is not clear, there will be a programme of 20 min talks by several Sigma members.

Sigma would like to thank Mrs G Campbell of The Levels, Birnie for the use of her field for this event.
